Michigan Golf Oasis

Southwest Greens of Michigan transformed a Bloomfield Hills property into a private golf retreat that feels like a mini course. The centerpiece is a 5,800 sq ft putting green designed by Michael Riley in conjunction with Nicklaus Design using Golden Bear Turf — for realistic playability, paired with a SWG premium hitting mat. Golden Bear logo — represents quality, and exceptional design you have come to know with Nicklaus Design, which makes it perfect for practice and play any time of year.

Total turf installed was 11,275 sq ft, with the putting surface at 5,800 sq ft (GB177, color 301). We used GB113 (color 303) for the collar / first-cut fringe and GB090 (color 301) for the rough / second-cut areas to create visual contrast and clarify play zones. The hitting mat is GB175 (color 302) and branded with the Golden Bear logo for that Nicklaus touch.

The crew started by mapping contours and laying a performance base engineered for consistent ball roll. Every layer was chosen to control ball speed, slope, and consistency. During the build, we dialed in slope percentages and other surface variables so the finished green can mimic tournament playability.

Our installers are hands-on golfers and turf specialists who know how each construction choice affects how a ball rolls and reacts. That experience matters when the goal is an authentic playing experience that tests shot-making and rewards practice.
